Androgen is a hybridization project incorporating fire performance and art with elements of goth, punk and industrial styling. As a performance group, we seek to achieve a state of expression through the use of fire and performance and ultimately break the stereotypical imagery associated with fire performance - to challenge the mold of mediocrity and the mundane that tends to plague society.
The images created by Androgen are based in the context of post-apocalyptic grace. The last semblance of creation in a broken down world of decay, corrosion and disintegration. Twisted metal and broken glass. Our reasoning behind this is quite straightforward, as there is a certain poetic truth in the senescence of humanity and the ruins left in its wake. At least it makes more sense than the constructed and fabricated reality presented by the headless society we are surrounded by every day. Fake smiles and even faker people.
Androgen is created by the fusion of two fire performers - Draevon and Stae. With a similar style and image, linked with an equal drive and motivation to exceed expectations, the two came together in 2005 to form Androgen - a fire group based around imagery, art and industrial decay.
Draevon and Stae first met at a fire performance in a music festival in early 2000. Draevon was already operating and performing in a local group - Incendium Fire Circus - and invited Stae to join soon after. Incendium Fire Circus went on to achieve a reputable amount of success over the following years before coming to an end in 2002.
Since coming together, Draevon and Stae have performed in a variety of groups and forms. With a recent change in direction, goals and expectations, Androgen was formed. Androgen represents a fresh start for the performers and a new breed of fire performance group.
Rather than a loose group of performers coming together once in a while to put together a rough show, Androgen aims to be a tight knit and well trained performance group, catering for large scale events with a degree of professionalism not often found in fire performance.
More important than live performance though, Draevon and Stae have chosen to focus their energies on the pursuit of fire performance art like that of no other group. Relentlessly searching for the perfect location - the perfect backdrop for their art - Androgen hopes to build a collection of images that define them as a group, define their direction and challenge the sterotype surrounding fire performance for a long time to come.
